Strengths

• EMPATHETIC

Klaus shows a lot of capability with sharing people's points of view. A shining example of this is when everyone is downstairs after Luther locks Vanya up in the chamber in fear of her powers and Klaus points out how scary it must be to suddenly find out you can do things you never knew you could do. He insists on talking to her instead of locking her up; he could relate to seeing her in the chamber because of all the times he spent locked in a mausoleum.

• OBSERVANT

Klaus knows people, he pays attention more than people really give him credit for. He proves how well he knows his siblings when he's in the beauty shop with Allison and Vanya and he describes various things about a few of the siblings and their love lives and he points out Allison lying to herself as her biggest flaw.

• MAGNETIC

Survival on the streets taught him to be whatever any one person might need at any given time just to secure a place to sleep or a meal for the night. This magnetism coupled with lyrics of songs from the future that sound wiser and deeper out of context than they normally would, lead him to accidentally becoming a cult leader to a group of lost and wayward people in the early 60’s.

• ADAPTABLE

Klaus can roll with just about anything that comes his way. His ability to adapt is shown in how easily and quickly he pulled himself together when he landed in the Vietnam War, where he met and fell in love with a soldier and fought on the front lines; and later in 1960, where charms his way into the good graces of a woman of status and collects clout of his own through displays of “levitation” (which were actually Ben holding him up) and other, various acts that people are up like candy.

Flaws

• PESSIMISM/DEFEATIST

Klaus spent a lot of time being told he was wasting his potential, weak, pathetic, etc... so his outlook about himself and his capabilities can be very short-sighted and bleak at times; he's grown out of some of it, but he still ends up very self-deprecating and pessimistic at times.

• SELFISH

He often acts in ways that are self-absorbed, like when he stole the ornate box containing his father’s journals containing information on all of the siblings’ powers (which ended up in Leonard’s hand and led him to be able to manipulate Vanya for his own purposes) so he could sell it for drug money. Despite being the only connection between Ben and the rest of their siblings, he often discounts what Ben says, pretends he isn't there at all, or claims Ben agrees with him even if he doesn't. It's almost a selfish sort of effort to keep Ben for himself.

• ATTENTION-SEEKING

He exudes classic middle child “look at me” behaviors in a variety of ways, including: the way he dresses, saying things for "shock value", and inserting himself into people's personal space/business.

• IMPULSIVE/REACTIONARY

Klaus is an incredibly impulsive person who often acts before he thinks. For example, his plan to try and save Dave by preventing him from going to the war. With little lead up, he tries to explain everything to a teenaged Dave and only succeeds in freaking him out.

General

Canon

Klaus is a complex case when it comes to describing how he acts and who he is as a person. First and foremost, because a large part of who he is, is actually a lie and little more than a well-worn mask that he prefers to the reality of the broken mess that he keeps hidden behind it.

On the surface, Klaus is a carefree, worry-free party boy with not a single care at all. This, along with his wild antics and gender-bending/androgynous wardrobe, is a persona that he gives out to the world, free of charge. It's the most magnetic part of him that makes people like--or at least want to like him.

However, hidden underneath the layers of booze, drugs, and that carefully-placed mask are the broken pieces of a man ravaged by his father's abuse.

Sensitive and compassionate, Klaus is not one to hide from his feelings or those of others. He will openly express fear or panic, or cry in front of other people without seeming to think or feel like it's not something he should do or share with people. He is also incredibly tactile and seeks to both give and receive comfort through touch-- a hand on an arm or shoulder or a simple hug.

Klaus is a bit of a fatalistic pessimist, always assuming the worst of people and situations-- because cynicism lessens his chances of being disappointed and if it turns out he's wrong, it's almost like a pleasant surprise. As much as he wants to believe people, particularly ones that press any kind of interest or care in his direction, he tends to disbelieve it or assume it's somehow manipulative in nature by default.

He holds a very low threshold for criticisms due to having so many--pathetic; weak; disappointment; junkie, the list goes on and on--thrown at him through the years and may react disproportionately to negative commentary. He also has a low tolerance for stressful situations, running from them as quickly and effectively as possible, usually in the form of pills or alcohol and preferably before a paralyzing bout of panic sets in.

Though it is hard to get through the number of walls Klaus has effectively built around himself through the last roughly two decades, once someone sticks around long enough to manage it, they will find a caring and loyal, if not ambitious or always dependable, person who will flay himself open for those he cares about when it matters most.

Penance (Take 1)

Klaus' time in Hell didn't do much in the way of adding to the breakdown of his psyche, but it certainly played hard with the already existing parts of his neurodivergencies.

• ANXIETY

He already suffers from it well enough on his own before coming to Hell, but the things that happened in the course of months he was there definitely helped fuel it more.

• DEPRESSION

Toward the end of his time in Hell, Klaus was in a deep, heavy depression spiral due to some events that took place in recent months.

• ADDICTION

Hell definitely had him leaning hard into the already-present addict behaviors.

The Village

The near-constant level of duress that the residents of Mathias Township were under has done a number on Klaus' psyche. As a result of that, he has been granted a few extra instabilities in his mental health.

• PARANOID HYPERFIXATION

Might see patterns where there are none and/or become solely focused on some conspiracy or other.

• INTERMITTENT DISASSOCIATION

When things touch too closely on some of his unresolved traumas, he might check out of things completely in the middle of a conversation; it usually doesn't last more than a couple of minutes, but it's obvious every time.

• SCOTOPHOBIA

Intense fear of darkness/night; pretty well what it says on the tin, you won't catch him anywhere without lights on, and if he does end up somewhere particularly dark, there's likely to be a panic attack happening.

• AGROMANIA

Intense desire to be in open spaces; almost an escalation of the claustrophobia he already suffers from, but he's hyperaware of how much space there is around him these days, and sometimes seeks being outside more than typical to assuage the panic that comes with feeling closed in.

In a world much like our own, on October 1, 1989, 43 women around the world who were not pregnant when they woke up that morning, spontaneously go into labor at exactly 12:00pm. An eccentric millionaire by the name of Sir Reginald Hargreeves tracked down 7 of those children and adopted them. This was the beginning of the tragic life of Number Four.

6 of the Hargreeves children grew up as a shining beacon of hope for the world as a team of superheroes. The final Hargreeves daughter was left on the sidelines for being "normal". However, abuse doesn't make for great coping mechanisms and between Reginald's rigorous training and unforgiving nature, and his own fear of the gory pictures of death he's constantly exposed to because of his power, Klaus turns to substance abuse. He spends a large amount of time inebriated because it makes his powers inaccessible.

The children stay estranged for years after the loss of 2 brothers, but Reginald's funeral brings them together again. In a whirlwind of events, one of their brothers reappears after 13 years, they find out they have less than a week to stop the Apocalypse, Klaus takes a trip to Vietnam and watches the man he loves die, and they discover Vanya had powers all along.

Vanya accidentally blows up the moon with a blast of her powers and with seconds left before the world is engulfed in flames, Five time travels to save them-- but they're scattered across the 1960s. Klaus charms his way into the life of a woman of status, cleans up his act, and accidentally creates a cult called Destiny's Children.

Eventually, the band is pulled back together again for-- you guessed it: Another Apocalypse. Also inadvertently caused by Vanya. They finally reach the end of the road, and are set for Five to time-jump them back to 2019 where they belong.

That journey is rough with detox to start, and all sort of temptations thrown his way in Hell.

He meets his roommates and spends time with his sister. Later, when the creatures referred to simply as Mares, who feed on fear and negative memories and force nightmares to come to life fly in, Klaus breaks his sobriety vow to escape the terrors brought by the creatures.

• After a very rough night with Vanya, Klaus seeks some conversation with people on the network; he also tries to find some hobbies to keep himself occupied.

• Roommate shenanigans with Harlan Halliday and Doc Holliday • Homelander gets to babysit a detoxing junkie. It goes about as well as imagined; Klaus spills some of Vanya's trauma to him.

Klaus spends a significant amount of time smoking on the roof; he realizes that for the first time in he doesn't wanna think about how long he has a crush (it's Harlan) and he admits it almost immediately upon realization, admits it. He helps Vanya through a breakdown that he doesn't know the cause of and has a very intense reunion with Number Five. He grows impossibly closer to Faith in a fast-track way neither of them really know how to handle. Late in the month, Klaus ends up Marked by The Veiled Order. At the end of the month, Klaus announces the Hargreeves are having a birthday party (for arguably the first time, for real, in their lives).

• Five follows up with Klaus after their fight. It's a very odd way to say "I love you", but it's definitely Very Five.
